About

Held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, and Her Highness Sheikha Jawaher bint Mohammed Al Qasimi, wife of His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah, and Chairperson of NAMA Women Advancement Establishment (NAMA), the two-day event was held under the theme, ‘Drivers of Change: A supportive ecosystem for women in the economy.”

With 55 speakers, 18 sessions, and 24 individual workshops, the 2nd edition of WEEGS brought together a host of local and global experts, women empowerment advocates and senior industry figures. The two-day session addressed development horizons and opportunities available to women across four pillars: gender-responsive procurement, women’s participation in value chains, the Women’s Empowerment Principles (WEPs), and women’s access to finance.

Aim

  • Against the backdrop of a MENA study which revealed that the share of female participation in the workforce in the region has only seen an increase of 0.3 per cent between 2005 and 2015, and an international study which stated that global GDP would receive a $28 trillion boost by 2025 simply by advancing women’s equity, WEEGS 2019 aimed to encourage leading entities, decision-makers and the public and private sector initiate actions to create a more inclusive environment, both in the workplace and real economy.

  • To translate recommendations into programmes and initiatives that will positively impact the reality of hundreds and thousands of women entrepreneurs and employees across the region and globally.
